At first glance, Separation of Property evokes the aesthetics of classic noir: a flawlessly dressed woman, a gun on the table, a cocktail in hand, and a bag overflowing with banknotes on the floor. Everything suggests a crime story. Yet the photograph subverts this initial reading to reveal a deeper critique: economic violence as a form of silent, structural control.
Through a visually seductive composition, Lídia Vives portrays a woman who, far from embodying the figure of the criminal, represents one who emancipates herself. Each element is carefully placed to confront the viewer’s prejudices: what may at first seem like greed or crime is, in reality, an act of reclamation.
The work poses a reflection on power, autonomy, and the social gaze imposed on women who demand what is rightfully theirs. Where does stigma end and justice begin?
