A dazzling, carnal image—quite literally—where kitsch becomes a vehicle for critique. All of my exes presents a close-up of the female body as a canvas of failed affections: tattooed and crossed-out names (Alexander, Philip, Isabella...) reveal a narrative of romantic cycles, marked by desire, naïve infatuation, and the compulsive repetition of mistakes. Only “Sebastian” remains uncrossed—for now.
The photograph operates as a visual satire on the recklessness of love, but also as a mirror of the social constructs that regulate the body and sexuality, especially through a gendered lens. Who is allowed to make the same romantic mistakes over and over without being judged?
Shot from a low angle, without revealing the character’s face, the image heightens her objectified and sexualized dimension. Yet the portrait is less of a person than of a myth—or perhaps just a rumor: do the tattoos actually exist? Or are they projections, symbolic marks of a story repeated so often that no one knows if it ever truly happened?
Small details—the hand grazing the skin, the snake-shaped ring, the hidden heart—evoke desire, sin, and temptation. But they also allude to the moral weight imposed on those who dare to live outside the prescribed script.
Furthermore, when the initials of the tattooed names (Alexander, Philip, Isabella, Sebastian) are joined, they form the word Apis, meaning “bee” in Latin. In the artist’s symbolic universe, the bee is a recurring motif, often hidden within her works. Here, it is subtly integrated through the names themselves, reinforcing the enigmatic and narrative character of the image.
